Not A Standalone Service

Investment management at Apriem is not a standalone service. It’s handled by our in-house Investment Team, working directly alongside our Wealth Management and Financial Planning team, as one integrated part of your overall plan rather than a separate transaction.

An Integrated Part of Your Wealth Management

Rather than treating the portfolio as a standalone piece, our Investment Team considers your financial plan, tax circumstances, cash flow needs, risk tolerance, time horizon, and estate planning goals when managing your portfolio. This team-based structure allows investment decisions to be coordinated with the broader planning work being done on your behalf, so a decision made in your portfolio isn’t made in isolation from the rest of your financial picture.

Coordinated, Not Standalone

Decisions about rebalancing, tax-loss harvesting, and account location, meaning which assets sit in which account types, are made with your full tax picture and estate plan in view, not just your risk tolerance and time horizon. A rebalancing decision, for example, is evaluated not only for what it does to your portfolio’s allocation, but for what it means for your taxes this year and how it fits into your broader plan.

Tax-Aware Investment Strategies

Our Investment Team uses tax-aware investment strategies within the portfolio itself, including tax-loss harvesting and thoughtful account location, to help manage the tax impact of the investments themselves. This works alongside, not instead of, the tax planning already built into your overall plan by our Wealth Management and Financial Planning team. Apriem does not prepare tax returns or replace your CPA; where appropriate, we coordinate directly with your CPA, sharing relevant information and aligning our recommendations with their work.

Managing Risk Through Diversification and Asset Allocation

We believe asset allocation, not individual stock selection, is generally the primary driver of a portfolio’s risk profile. Our Investment Team builds and manages portfolios around genuine diversification, meaning diversification across asset classes and how those assets actually behave in relation to each other, not simply a larger number of individual holdings. Risk management is treated as an ongoing, active part of the process, not a single decision made at account opening and left unrevisited.

What This Looks Like in Practice

In practice, this means you don’t have to be the one relaying information between your investment manager, your CPA, and your estate attorney. Our team works directly with those outside professionals where appropriate, so investment decisions are made with full context. This coordination depends on the information you share with us, consistent with your Wealth Management Agreement, our ability to manage your portfolio around your full picture is only as complete as what we have visibility into.

Who Manages Your Portfolio

Your Investment Team includes Benjamin Lau and Jennifer Olson, CFA® charterholders with more than 18 years at Apriem. Our analysts are pursuing the CFA® charter. Members of our Investment Team have been featured in television and print interviews with outlets including Bloomberg, CNBC, and The Wall Street Journal, sharing their views on the stock market and investment trends. Apriem claims compliance with the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS®).
